US Immigration and the Mickey Tax

Wed Jun 25, 2008 at 04:18:30 PM PDT

Atrios says:

Yes this is a horrible idea. Perhaps just make customs and immigration a bit more pleasant instead?

As a US Citizen, Duncan gets to see the best parts of US Customs and Immigration. I'm not, and while I got to experience some of that VIP treatment during the nine years I was a permanent resident alien, I've also seen the other side.

"Objectively pro-Ahmedijenad"

Mon Aug 27, 2007 at 04:46:43 PM PDT

Update: as pointed out by EnderRS below, this all makes a lot more sense once you realize that I can't spell Ahmadinejad.

I'm sure we all remember, back in 2002 and 2003, if you opposed the idea of invading Iraq you were accused of being "objectively pro-Saddam". It occurs to me that with the powers that be obviously desperate to invade Iran, we can't be far away from those who oppose that idea of being "objectively pro-Ahmedijenad".

Currently Google shows no hits for the Ahmedijenad version. [Update: there are seven hits if you spell the bloody name right, including from sites like Atrios and AlicuBlog that I read regularly]. There are over 1,400 for the Saddam version, the top two being from instapundit. I think we need a sweepstake on when the first use of this phrase will be (outside this diary), and who will use it.

Not sure what the prize will be, but it will certainly be cheap and only slightly relevant to Iran.

New Zealand being sucked into Iraq?

Wed Aug 15, 2007 at 04:40:31 PM PDT

Just how unpopular is the US-led occupation of Iraq in countries that don't get Fox News? The news broke here yesterday that Air New Zealand flew 2 charter flights that took Australian troops to Iraq. Prime Minister Helen Clark is "appalled". Foreign Minister Winston Peters has launched an investigation.

Why is this such a big deal?

Terror! Terror! Terror!

Thu Aug 02, 2007 at 06:57:04 PM PDT

16 pipe bombs discovered in garage, US military bases probable target!!!11!!ONE!!

ABC only seems to have this bounty hunter's word for it, so apply appropriate skepticism. Plus, the putative terrorist is a white christian, so don't expect too much bruhaha in the other hemiblogosphere, even though this is easily as well-sourced as the other stuff they rant about.

NZ climate change efforts applauded by Al Gore

Mon Nov 13, 2006 at 07:48:59 PM PDT

We're a bit schizophrenic on climate change over here. We project this image of clean, green New Zealand, yet we have the fourth highest ecological footprint per capita in the world. Al Gore says Helen Clark's government is providing "tremendous leadership" on climate change, at the same time as it pressures the UK government not to impose a food miles tax.

We have an official government website on climate change, but we may not be doing enough.

Say goodnight, Gracie

Thu Nov 09, 2006 at 12:55:18 AM PDT

Jon Tester and Jim Webb have won their respective races, dropping the curtain on the acts of Burns and Allen.

Not my original joke, I'm afraid. Credit goes to usenetter   Greg G. in this post.

Apparently Gracie never replied "Goodnight, Gracie". That gag was invented by Rowan and Martin for the Laugh In.

Minnesota Election law help needed

Thu Nov 02, 2006 at 01:30:18 PM PDT

Can you vote in person after you have cast an absentee ballot?

My wife has already voted by absentee ballot. Since we live overseas, Minnesota election law only lets her vote for federal races. In our case, this is the Senate (looking like Amy Klobuchar will win comfortably) and MN-03 (south & west suburbs of Minneapolis, the only safe Republican seat in the state).

Unfortunately, my sister-in-law just died, and my wife has gone back to Minnesota for the funeral. She will still be there on the 7th. Can she vote in person, and can she vote in the state races if she does? The Governor's race looks very close, and we'd hate to lose a chance to cast a vote for Mike Hatch.

Obviously we intend that the absentee ballot would be discarded if she voted in person. There's not an intention to vote twice, nor would there be any point - both races in which she has already voted have comfortable margins.

GOP candidate for Oklahoma Superintendent of Education shoots textbooks

Thu Oct 19, 2006 at 08:07:21 PM PDT

Bill Crozier is running for State Superintendent of Education in Oklahoma. He apparently gave a local TV station a video of himself shooting textbooks to prove they could be used as shields in the case of a school shooting.

http://www.koco.com/...

Does this quote make any sense to anybody: "We need to look at protection of young people that sometimes people may think you are a little smarter than everybody else or a higher IQ or whatever."?

This is the best person the Oklahoma Republicans could find to run the state's schools. They're in worse shape than I thought.

Updated: Oklahoma, not Ohio.

My LTE was published (online)

My short little LTE got published on the Minneapolis Star-Tribune website: http://www.startribune.com/...

Scroll down to the antepenultimate letter, or read it below the fold. The title was added by the paper.

Is an 18 point swing enough?

Thu Jun 08, 2006 at 06:02:40 PM PDT

I was feeling confident about Francine Busby's "near victory" in the CA-50 special election. After all, if the NRCC wants to spend five million dollars in every congressional district to get an 18% swing to the democrats, then they spend over two billion dollars, and we get a democratic house, right?

Right. But it's not the landslide you think.

The Tsunami Watch - a New Zealand Perspective

Thu May 04, 2006 at 03:13:29 PM PDT

Fortunately, there turned out not to be a tsunami as a result of the Tonga earthquake (alright, a little one in Niue and Pago Pago). But there was a tsunami warning, and I bet you're dying to know what one sounds like.

MN-03: Is Wilde in?

Wed Apr 26, 2006 at 09:41:18 PM PDT

I don't live in Minnesota any more, but I still try and keep abreast of what's going on there. When I last checked, Jim Ramstad, Republican incumbent since 1990, had no opponent. I can understand why it would be hard to find a candidate. In 2004 Deb Watts only got 35% of the vote.

Today I checked the MN-03 page at the Fifty State Page, and saw that Wendy Wilde is listed as his opponent.

I really liked Wendy's show on the Air America affiliate AM 950, but apparently she is no longer on. Is this due to a run for Congress? Wendy's website merely says she is "exploring" a run.

Does anyone in the Twin Cities have any more information?

Senator Dayton on censure

Sun Apr 02, 2006 at 12:48:25 PM PDT

I got an email back from Mark Dayton, soon-to-be former senator from Minnesota. He's against censure.

As far as I can tell, his position because presidents break the law more often than Congress censures them, censure is an inappropriately strong response to a law-breaking president.

Text of Senator Dayton's letter after the break.

American Family Association are traitors!

Thu Mar 23, 2006 at 06:01:51 PM PDT

So the AFA are calling for a travel boycott of Australia because of a couple of mild swear words in a tourist ad. They appear to have forgotten that Australia has the 3rd largest military force in Iraq (4th if you count private contractors as a block).

Is this how we treat our allies? Will Dubya be complaining, as he did over the Dubai Ports World brouhaha, that if we don't reward our allies they may turn against us?

Do members of the AFA ever travel abroad, anyway? Travel is supposed to broaden the mind, and there's not much evidence of that.

RedState.org and the DailyKos DNS hijack

Fri Mar 18, 2005 at 01:39:40 PM PDT

I love Google Mail, a.k.a. GMail. I was reading an email thread between me and a friend about a website I'd just set up, and up pops a link to this thread over at RedState.org.

Now this website is nothing to do with politics, it's actually all to do with Star Wars.

I don't know if I got the redstate.org link just because the email thread was about DNS problems, or if Google is perusing the rest of my emails and figuring out I like politics, too. I thought it was interesting, either way.

What should I do with $603?

Fri Feb 11, 2005 at 08:03:37 AM PDT

I have a very good job, and make more than the limit for social security contributions. Judiciously studying my W2 leads me to believe that if there were no cap on social security taxes, I would have paid an extra $603. I'm inclined to do something productive with that money.

You may only vote in this poll if you promise not to tell my wife.

My Senate letters

Thu Jan 20, 2005 at 05:47:37 PM PDT

To Mark Dayton:

Please do not condone torture by voting to confirm Alberto Gonzalez as Attorney General.
I understand that the President is traditionally accorded substantial leeway in selecting his cabinet. I do not believe that leeway extends to allowing the President to appoint an Attorney General who appears to believe that the President has the authority to order torture, and more generally to act without regard to United States law and international treaties ratified by Congress.
We are losing the battle for hearts and minds in the Islamic world. It does not help us to appoint to cabinet rank a man who, even if he did not directly order it, declared the legality of the Abu Ghraib atrocities.
Thank you for your time. I look forward to supporting you in your re-election campain next year.

Letter to Norm Coleman is after the break.

F*ck the South

Thu Nov 04, 2004 at 01:07:46 PM PDT

Lincoln was a Republican, and thus he got it wrong. He should have let the South secede. They'd be an eastern Mexico. Miami would be like Cancun, but with hurricanes.

I drew a new flag. Removed from the stars: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia. Removed from the stripes:  Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia

The electoral college would be 260 for Kerry, 159 for Bush. Except Bush would have had to run from his native state, rather than from Texas, so maybe he'd have taken Connecticut.
